marine bioprospecting - Novel Drugs from the Sea

Company highlights

Background:

2003:
Start of marine bioprospecting project in the Trondheimsfjord. SINTEF in collaboration with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

2003-2006:
Establishing the biobank based on samples from sediment, sponges and sea surface. Collection and pre-screening of material. 2006. First strain collection established. 7000 bacterial isolates, several extracts of which with proven strong antiinfective and/or anticancer activity.

2007-2009:
Expansion of the strain collection to more than 10000 bacterial isolates representing strains of high taxonomic diversity. The collection is pointed as one of the most central bio-banks for bioprospecting in Norway.

2009-2010:
Further documentation of the strain collection as source of possible new drugs.

Establishment:

2010:
MarBiLeads AS established by SINTEF based on the exclusive access to the biobank and to the unique R&D results from the marine bioprospecting project obtained by SINTEF/NTNU.

Development:

Business development supported by grants from Inovation Norway (IN)

2010-2015:
Expanded R&D programme financed by grants from Norwegiamn Research Council (NCR)

2012:
MarBiLeads expands its biobank access to include the National strain collection «MarBank» at the Institute of Marine Research in Tromsø.
