The Marine Biobank
MarBiLeads’ strategic partners SINTEF and NTNU started to establish the biobank of marine microorgasnims isolated from samples from bioprospecting of specific areas (bottom sediments ) and sea animals (sponges) from the Trondheim fjord in 2003.
The biobank today contains more than 9000 isolates of which actinomycetes is the predominant class of microorganisms. Molecular taxonomy studies have revealed that the diversity of the actinomycetes in the Trondheim fjord is surprisingly huge and the biobank has been pointed as one of the most central bio-banks for bioprospecting in Norway.
The biobank is the basis for MarBiLeads’ targeted drug development project.
